Apple’s OLED iPad mini streets Friday at $699 — independent reviews are in. Verdict: WAIT

Newsroom Oct 26: 8.5-inch OLED, A20 Pro, IP67, $699 Wi-Fi / $849 cellular. Available November 6. Pierce’s Verge review (Nov 3, 9:00 a.m. ET) likes it and still calls $699 steep. Unreviewed here.

Apple Newsroom dated the tablet October 26. Pre-orders opened October 28. Availability is Friday, November 6, in Apple Stores and at authorized resellers. US starting prices on that release: $699 for Wi-Fi, $849 for Wi-Fi + Cellular, $649 with education savings. Midnight and starlight. 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. David Pierce’s Verge review, dated November 3 at 9:00 a.m. ET, is the first independent writeup this desk checked. He spent a week with a midnight cellular 512GB nano-texture unit. This desk has not held the hardware.

What Apple printed

  • 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR. Newsroom: peak brightness up to 1200 nits, 600 nits full-screen SDR and HDR, 2,000,000:1 contrast, 1-nit minimum. 24 percent thinner bezels. Nano-texture is an option; the product page limits that glass to 256GB and 512GB models.
  • 5.4 mm thin. Product page: 14 percent thinner and 13 percent lighter than the previous model. Newsroom names the 5.4 mm figure without those percentages.
  • IP67, tested to 1 meter for 30 minutes under IEC 60529. First iPad with that rating on the Newsroom page. Liquid damage is not covered under warranty.
  • A20 Pro. Newsroom: up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU, up to 2.7x GPU, up to 4.5x AI versus the previous generation, “up to a 6-core CPU,” 7-core GPU. Dual 16-core Neural Engine is specified on the 512GB configuration, not as a family-wide line.
  • Acoustic Display. Landscape 12MP Center Stage camera. N1: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread. Cellular models get the C2 modem, “up to 50 percent faster” cellular data than the previous mini.
iPad mini is beloved for its fantastic portability, performance, and display by a wide range of users, from creators and small business owners to doctors, field service workers, and gamers.— Dave Pakula, Apple VP of Hardware Engineering, Oct 26 Newsroom

What Pierce put on the record

The Verge headline: “The 2026 iPad Mini is a terrific tiny tablet — for a big price.” Pierce calls it “the best iPad Mini yet” and “a huge leap over the previous model,” then says the $1,249 unit in his hands is not something he can tell you to buy, and that even the cheapest Wi-Fi 128GB OLED “starts at $699, by a wide margin the highest starting price ever for a Mini.” He writes that $699 “feels at least $100 too high,” and that $50 more reaches an iPad Air. Those are his comparisons, not a review from this desk.

Refresh rate: Apple’s product page and the October 26 Newsroom do not print a hertz figure. Pierce writes the Mini “has a refresh rate capped at 60Hz rather than the 120Hz you’ll get on most other recent Apple devices,” and that Apple’s public answer has been that OLED’s faster pixel response makes 120Hz “irrelevant.” He disagrees. This page is not inventing a 60Hz line on Apple’s spec sheet. If you care about ProMotion, The Verge is the check, not apple.com/ipad-mini.

This site’s Tech & Gear pages cover phones, watches, and audio. There is no iPad Worth it review on respawnhq.net or actuallyworthit.com — the generated compare copy already says “No iPad, Mac, or Duo page.” The hub is still https://respawnhq.net/tech.
